The Government's nationalstrategy for sport and physical activity is called 'Game Plan' [December 2002]. Its twin aims are to [a] increase mass participation.[b] improve international success.

Game Plan presents an interim target of 50% participation by 2011; by 2020, the vision is that 70% of individuals will be undertaking 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days per week.

Currently only 30% of the population are engaged in this level of exercise. The reality gap between long term vision and current participation is considerable.

DC Leisure Management Ltd can help in closing this gap by working in partnership with local authorities to provide opportunity where need is greatest, raising the profile and capabilities of local authority facilities and by training staff to be role models to their community through their own approach to and love of sport and fitness combined with a relational approach that encourages long term participation.

Sports Development is about providing/promoting opportunities and encouraging people to:

  • Take up a broad range of sports activities
  • Participate on a regular basis
  • Develop their skills, fitness and interest in sport
  • Achieve the highest standards of performance in sports activities for those with personal ability and commitment
  • Get involved with teaching, coaching, supporting, spectating and administering sport in other ways

The agenda is broadening; however, as new developments in the administration of CPA look likely to add to the pressure local councils are already experiencing to provide evidence of how leisure and sport contribute to their Community Strategies [Health, Education, Employment, Safety, Crime Reduction, etc]. DCLM engages with these issues and works in partnership to provide solutions which will have long term impacts.

In fact, Game Plan quoted our Fit to Succeed partnership project with Exeter City Council as a case study of best practice which could significantly contribute not only to achieving the government's vision for participation in physical exercise, but which would also contribute to improving health and academic achievement.
